چکیده

ELECT The specific differential attenuation caused by large raindrops and a special form of melting hail is computed and studied. Raindrops of smoothed conical shapes and hailstones modelled by an ice sphere surrounded by a water torus are considered. For the former, scattering computation is carried out by the T-matrix method, while the higherorder method of moments in the surface integral equation formulation is used for the latter. Results show a much higher specific differential attenuation factor for hail particles, with the smallest hail showing values similar to the largest raindrops. This can explain the higher than expected differential attenuation observed by C-band radars in intense storms as reported in some previous studies. Results also show that the melting hail particles exhibit higher specific differential phase factor than large raindrops, but have similar differential reflectivity.

Assimilation of Simulated Polarimetric Radar Data for a Convective Storm Using Ensemble Kalman Filter. Part I: Observation Operators for Reflectivity and Polarimetric Variables

i Abstract A radar simulator for polarimetric radar variables including reflectivities at horizontal and vertical polarizations, the differential reflectivity and the specific differential phase, has been developed. This simulator serves as a testbed for developing and testing forward observation operators of polarimetric radar variables that are needed when directly assimilating these variable...

Correction for attenuation of radar reflectivity using polarization data

SUMMARK Attenuation by heavy rain is a major operational problem in radar estimation of rainfall rates, and one which is increasingly severe at wavelengths shorter than 10 cm. Gate-by-gate correction algorithms, including those using both reflectivity ( Z H ) and differential reflectivity ( Z D R ) , are inherently unstable. In addition values of ZH and ZDK arc affected by hail, which causes li...

A Comparison between Polarimetric Radar and Wind Profiler Observations of Precipitation in Tropical Showers

This paper describes the results of an experiment that combines the data from a 5-cm-wavelength polarimetric radar and multiple-frequency wind profilers to examine the polarimetric signatures associated with the microphysical structure of several relatively shallow thunderstorms and also to examine quantitative rainfall measurements made with the polarimetric radar. These shallow storms produce...

A Robust C-Band Hydrometeor Identification Algorithm and Application to a Long-Term Polarimetric Radar Dataset

A new 10-category, polarimetric-based hydrometeor identification algorithm (HID) for C band is developed from theoretical scattering simulations including wet snow, hail, and big drops/melting hail. TheHID is applied to data from seven wet seasons in Darwin, Australia, using the polarimetric C-band (C-POL) radar, to investigate microphysical differences between monsoon and break periods. Scatte...
